Biography
Dr. Akhil Penmetcha, an accomplished Gastroenterology and Hepatology professional, will join Physicians East soon. His focus is on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, including complex cases of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Dr. Penmetcha obtained his medical degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and residency and fellowship training at Stony Brook University Hospital. A board-certified physician through the American Board of Internal Medicine, he is committed to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to his patients.
During his training, Dr. Penmetcha researched the management of Gastrointestinal Bleed after Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation and the cost-effectiveness of prophylactic oral vancomycin use in preventing recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. He has presented his findings at various prestigious conferences and has contributed to multiple publications in the field.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Penmetcha has been recognized for his excellence, receiving honors such as the Second Year Gastroenterology Fellow Attendee at the ACG Gastroenterology Conference. He was also actively engaged in professional and volunteer activities, serving as a Quality Improvement Chief Fellow and participating in initiatives to improve patient care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Penmetcha enjoys spending time outdoors, indulging in activities like hiking, running, and tennis. He also has a passion for cooking, specializing in Thai, Malaysian, and Indian cuisine.
