PEG Replacement

After placement of an abdominal tube that delivers food or medication to your stomach, the tube may need replacement or need to be replaced with a different type of tube. The PEG tube replacement is often accomplished in a medical setting performed by your specialist when replacement is clinically required. The procedure is generally very simple and often done with a small amount of sedative, requiring the use of a specialty center for the task.

Before your visit

Be sure to discuss all your medications and allergies with your physician. Follow the dietary advice given to you by the endoscopy center. Be prepared to spend several hours at the facility to ensure that the procedure has gone well and your new tube is functioning adequately.

Day of visit

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. You will change into a gown. The procedure will take about 15 minutes and you will be returned to the recovery room. The doctor will talk with you after the procedure.

After the visit

Following a brief recovery, normal activity and feeding can be resumed.  No driving for 24 hours if you have received a sedative. Your diet should be slowly advanced as directed by your physician. Restart your medications as directed by the physician.
